While Shadow and Bone’s second season is about to premiere on Netflix, author Leigh Bardugo also has another adaptation of her work in development. I’m talking about Ninth House, Bardugo’s first foray into adult fiction, a story set in a world where the secret societies at Yale University wield magic in addition to privilege and power. We found out back in October 2019 that Amazon Studios picked up the rights to adapt the book, but we haven’t heard much about the project since… until now.
In an interview with Collider about Hell Bent, her sequel to Ninth House that came out in January, Bardugo also shared an update on where things stand on the television adaptation of the first book.
“All I can tell you is the wheels of Hollywood turn very slowly, and I can’t even talk about who I’ve been working on the project with,” she said. “But I can tell you that we have a pilot that I absolutely love and that it has been a complete delight to work on. Unlike with Shadow and Bone, I actually got to get in there and work on the writing, break the story, deal with notes in a much more hands-on way. And I loved it. And I also feel like it made me twice as excited to write Hell Bent, because it made me think of the story in different ways. And that, I think, is a pleasure.”
While we still don’t have any news on casting or if/when the Ninth House series will go into production, it’s nice to get an update that the project is still moving forward and that Bardugo is closely involved. Here’s to hoping we’ll get some official news soon.
